Pekanbaru, November 11, 2025 — The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Riau (UNRI), held a Workshop & Roundtable Discussion as part of its efforts to establish a new Political Science Study Program. This initiative marks an important step in expanding FISIP UNRI’s academic scope while responding to the region’s need for competent human resources in the fields of politics and governance.
The event, held at the FISIP UNRI Dean’s Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, was officially opened by the Dean of FISIP UNRI, Dr. Meyzi Heriyanto, S.Sos., M.Si. In his opening remarks, Dr. Meyzi stated that the establishment of the Political Science Program is a strategic step to strengthen FISIP UNRI’s role as a center for the development of social sciences and public policy studies in Riau Province.
“The presence of the Political Science Program at FISIP UNRI is expected to become a platform for the development of political knowledge and practice that is ethical, scientific, and rooted in the public interest. We aim to produce graduates who not only understand theories but are also capable of making real contributions to democratic processes and governance,” said Dr. Meyzi.

Following the opening session, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Tito Handoko, S.IP., M.Si., delivered his report, explaining that the workshop and discussion were designed to gather insights, feedback, and recommendations from stakeholders to ensure that the curriculum design and academic structure of the new program align with regional needs and national education standards.
On the same occasion, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Auradian Marta, S.IP., M.A., expressed appreciation for the participation and support of all speakers and attendees. He emphasized that the event demonstrated genuine academic collaboration involving diverse societal elements in building a foundation for political education that is relevant to current challenges.

“We highly appreciate the enthusiasm of participants and the support from various institutions. Collaborations like this are key to ensuring that the upcoming Political Science Program carries a distinct Riau identity, is policy-research oriented, and capable of producing leaders with integrity,” Dr. Auradian remarked.
The event also featured Dr. Asep A. Sahid Gatara, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Political Science Study Programs (APSIPOL) and Head of the Center for Quality Standards Development at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, Dr. Asep emphasized the crucial role of universities in strengthening political literacy and preparing graduates who possess analytical competence, integrity, and practical skills in political and governance management.

“A Political Science Program should not only produce academics but also nurture future leaders who can think critically and ethically. Collaboration between universities and democratic institutions forms a vital foundation for achieving this goal,” Dr. Asep stated.

Participants of the Workshop & Roundtable Discussion included representatives from the Riau Provincial Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), the Riau Provincial General Election Commission (KPU), Kampar Regency Bawaslu and KPU, BPJS Employment Riau Region, students, and representatives of civic organizations across Riau.
The discussion sessions were dynamic and interactive, featuring exchanges of ideas on curriculum structure, graduate profiles, and potential collaborations between academia, government institutions, and independent organizations. Participants also offered valuable suggestions on developing a program that is adaptive to contemporary issues such as political digitalization, public participation, and leadership ethics.




Through this event, FISIP UNRI reaffirmed its commitment to continuous innovation in developing academic programs that are relevant to socio-political dynamics. The establishment of the Political Science Study Program is expected to serve as a concrete step toward nurturing young generations who are nationally minded, have integrity, and are ready to contribute to regional progress and the strengthening of Indonesia’s democracy.
